Go inland: cenotes are freshwater sinkholes in the jungle, so seaweed never reaches them, and ATV and zipline trails aren't affected. Seaweed usually hits open beaches somewhere between April and September and can change within days (Tripadvisor forum, Jan 2026; Cancun Trip Insider, Jul 2026). In June and July 2026, travelers reported little or none on Isla Mujeres and much less at Costa Mujeres. Try our 3-cenote swim tour or the half-day ATV, zipline and cenote tour.

Take the ferry if you want the most island time at your own pace; book a catamaran if you want snorkeling, lunch and drinks handled. On your own, Ultramar ferries from Puerto Juárez, north of downtown, run most often; hotel-zone docks have fewer boats that stop earlier, and travelers say you needn't buy tickets ahead (Tripadvisor, Jul 2026). Check the US State Department advisory before you travel: in March 2026 it listed Quintana Roo, Cancún's state, at Level 2, "exercise increased caution." On our tours you're picked up at your hotel in marked vans, activities run in daylight with bilingual guides, and you're driven back. If an alert changes your plans, cancellation is free up to 72 hours before.

The tour itself is paid 100% online when you book, so you only need a little cash on the day. Bring some for the extras our tour pages list as not included: the reef tax on Puerto Morelos snorkel tours, lockers, soft drinks, photos and tips, which are up to you. The whale shark tour adds a dock tax; the catamaran page says taxes and fees are included. Forum regulars suggest small peso bills, bank ATMs and declining the ATM's own currency conversion (Tripadvisor, Mar and Sep 2026).

For clearer water and milder weather, aim for the drier months, roughly November to April; for whale sharks you need summer. July and August are the hottest, seaweed mostly hits beaches from spring into late summer, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Spring cold fronts can bring rain and choppy seas (Tripadvisor, Apr 2026). Jungle ATV and cenote tours don't depend on the sea, while boat tours only sail when the port authority allows.

Yes, round-trip transport from most Cancún hotels is included, and you can book before you know your hotel: we confirm the pickup point and time with you on WhatsApp. On the half-day ATV and horseback tours, pickup is about 45 minutes before the 9:30 am or 1:30 pm start; whale shark pickup is around 7:00 am and the catamaran around 8:00 am. Some hotels use a nearby meeting point, and several tours also pick up in Playa del Carmen.

Yes, if you don't mind the logistics. For the reef, take a bus or taxi to Puerto Morelos (forum regulars suggest the bus plus a local cab, Tripadvisor, Feb 2026), arrange a boat and guide in town, and pay the reef fee. For cenotes you'll want a car or taxi, and you pay entry at each one. It can cost less and you set the pace. A tour adds hotel pickup, gear, life jackets, a guide and several stops in one half day, as on our Puerto Morelos reef snorkel.

Roughly June to mid-September, with July and August giving the best odds; Mexico's national parks authority (CONANP) sets the exact dates each year, and some sources put the start in mid-May. Sightings aren't guaranteed: these are wild animals, and the port authority can cancel trips for weather. Our whale shark tour runs only in season, picks up around 7:00 am in Cancún, lasts about 7 hours, takes groups of up to 10 and includes snorkel gear and life jackets.

For an easy reef trip close to Cancún, Puerto Morelos is the usual pick: its protected reef is part of the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Our Puerto Morelos reef snorkel includes mask, fins, a life jacket and a boat with a bathroom and easy water access; turtles and rays are possible but not guaranteed. The Isla Mujeres catamaran also stops at a reef. Akumal, known for turtles, and Cozumel are farther away, and we don't run those from Cancún.

You don't have to go far: there are cenotes (natural freshwater sinkholes) in the jungle south of Cancún, and Puerto Morelos promotes a cenote route inland from town (municipality, Oct 2025). Yes, from age 4 on several tours. On the half-day ATV and zipline tour and the full-day ATV, cenote and reef combo, kids 4 to 12 ride as the passenger on a shared ATV. The cenote tour starts at 5. The horseback combo starts at 6, and riders must be at least 1 meter (3.2 ft) tall. On the reef snorkel, snorkelers must be 6 to 65; younger kids can ride on the boat with an adult. Several tours have child tickets, so check each tour page.

Not the ATV, zipline or horseback tours: their pages say they're not recommended during pregnancy or with spinal injuries or heart conditions. The cenote tour excludes people with back, shoulder or neck problems or recent surgery, and reef snorkeling is for ages 6 to 65 with no breathing, heart or mobility problems. The horseback combo has a 242 lb (110 kg) weight limit. Boat rides can get bumpy, so check with your doctor and message us before booking a boat trip. Our jungle and reef tours aren't wheelchair accessible.

It's worth it if you want several activities in one outing without arranging transport; skip it if you'd rather spend hours in one place. The half-day ATV tour takes about 4 hours with round-trip hotel transport and covers an ATV ride, 5 ziplines, 3 hanging bridges, a cenote swim and a snack.
