Adventure tours in Tulum, Playa del Carmen & the Riviera Maya: the short version

Our Riviera Maya tours are shared day trips from Tulum and Playa del Carmen: ATV and zipline parks with cave cenotes, Tulum and Cobá ruins combos, Chichén Itzá with Ik Kil cenote, sea turtle snorkeling in Akumal, the Yalkú inlet and Kaan Luum lagoon, Sian Ka'an, horseback riding and bull shark diving. You pay online when you book, most tours include transport, gear and a meal or snacks, and cancellation is free up to 72 hours before.

Questions travelers ask about Tulum, Playa del Carmen & the Riviera Maya

Is the seaweed (sargassum) bad in Tulum and Playa del Carmen right now, and what can we do instead of the beach?

It changes day to day, so no month is reliably seaweed-free, but jungle and cenote days aren't affected. As of mid-October 2026, Tulum, Akumal and Playa del Carmen were rated moderate on howisthesargassum.com, and Quintana Roo's monitoring network expected arrivals to keep falling into December after a June–July peak. Check that site or the USF sargassum bulletin before you go. Good swaps: the Tulum ATV, ziplines & cave cenote tour, the Cobá ATV adventure or the Kaan Luum lagoon & cenotes tour.

We're staying in Tulum without a car (or in Playa del Carmen). Do your tours pick us up at our hotel or Airbnb?

Yes, transport is included on most tours, but in Tulum you usually meet the van at a set point, such as Súper Akí supermarket, not at your hotel or Airbnb. The exception is the Jungle ATV & cavern cenote tour, with pickup at your hotel lobby or an agreed midway point. In Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal, tours like the ATV, 5 ziplines & cave cenote tour pick up at your hotel; allow 1 to 1.5 hours each way. You don't need your hotel details to book.

Do we need cash on tour day, pesos or dollars, and how much should we tip the guide?

Bring some cash in pesos, but only for extras: you pay for the tour online when you book. Cash covers any entrance fees or local taxes your tour page lists as not included, plus tips, drinks, photos and some locker deposits. US dollars are widely accepted around Playa del Carmen but at a worse rate, with change given in pesos (traveler reports, September 2026), and small sites often want cash. Tips are optional and not included; locals say guides prefer them in pesos.

Tulum, Cobá or Chichén Itzá: which Mayan ruins are worth it if we don't want to spend hours in the car?

From Tulum, locals often recommend Cobá: about an hour's drive into the jungle, with bikes and the Nohoch Mul pyramid, climbable again since December 2025. Tulum's ruins are small but sit on cliffs above the sea and pair easily with a cenote. Chichén Itzá is the biggest and busiest, about 2.5 hours each way, so it fills a day; our tour leaves from Playa del Carmen. See Tulum ruins, Cobá & cenote, the Cobá ATV adventure or Chichén Itzá + Ik Kil. We don't sell Ek Balam.

Are ruin and park entrance fees included in the tour price, or do we pay at the gate?

It depends on the tour; each page lists it under what's included. Included: Chichén Itzá and Ik Kil entry on Chichén Itzá + Ik Kil, Cobá entry on the Cobá ATV adventure, and park and conservation fees on the all-in Tulum ATV tour. Paid in cash on site: the Tulum ruins fee and Akumal or local taxes on our ruins, turtle and snorkel combos, plus Sian Ka'an taxes. As of mid-2026, local press put the Tulum ruins fee at about 265 pesos per foreign adult; it changes often.

Will we be herded like cattle on a group tour, or do you offer private tours?

Our day trips are shared, not private, and most list a maximum of 15 travelers (Chichén Itzá takes up to 30); bull shark diving is the private exception. To keep the day unhurried, choose fewer stops: the Tulum ruins, cenote & turtle snorkel tour also comes as ruins + cenote or cenote + turtles only, and the Tulum ruins, reef & cenote tour runs about 5 hours from Tulum. Early starts help too: the Chichén Itzá tour reaches the site before the heat and the biggest crowds.

Do we need a guide to swim with turtles in Akumal, and what are the rules?

Yes, inside the protected turtle zone of Akumal Bay you need an authorized guide; outside the buoyed area people still snorkel on their own (travel guides and forum posts, December 2025 to March 2026). Rules reported in 2026: wear a life vest, no fins, reef-safe sunscreen or none, keep about 3 m (10 ft) away, and never touch or chase turtles. Sources disagree on Monday closures. Our cenote & Akumal turtle swim and ATV + turtle swim include a guide and snorkel gear. Turtles are wild, so sightings aren't guaranteed.

How safe is Tulum these days, and are the ATV and zipline tours safe?

Plan as you would for any busy destination: check the U.S. State Department's current advisory for Quintana Roo, book transport in advance, and ignore vendors at the Highway 307 turnoff to the Tulum ruins, who have no say over admission (Tulum Times, August 2026). Tulum and Chichén Itzá added metal detectors at their entrances in April 2026. On our ATV and zipline tours, guides explain each activity first and provide the safety gear, and ATV drivers must be 18 (16 or 17 at the guide's discretion).

Is September or October a bad time to visit? Will rain or a hurricane ruin our tours?

Usually not, but plan some flexibility. Hurricane season runs June to November, and September and October are the wettest months, yet rain tends to come in spells of two to four overcast days with breaks, not nonstop (local resident, February 2026). December to April is drier. Rain makes ATV trails muddier, and wind, more common in winter and early spring, can cloud the water on snorkel stops. Tours can change or be called off in bad weather, and cancellation is free up to 72 hours before.

Is ruins + cenote + snorkel in one day too much with kids?

Usually not, if you start from Tulum, where the stops are close together. The Tulum ruins, reef & cenote tour takes about 5 hours from an 8:45 AM Tulum start (ages 11 and up), and the Tulum ruins, cenote & turtle snorkel tour takes kids from age 3 and also comes in shorter two-stop versions. From Playa del Carmen, add about an hour each way. What tires families is distance: locals call Cobá, Ek Balam and a cenote in one day too long to enjoy.

How old do kids need to be for ATV, zipline and cenote tours, and can teens drive the ATV?

Most Tulum ATV and zipline tours take children from age 4, riding as ATV passengers with an adult. ATV drivers must be 18; 16- and 17-year-olds may drive at the guide's discretion. The zipline weight limit is 265 lb (120 kg) on most tours and 309 lb (140 kg) on the Jungle ATV & cavern cenote tour. Exceptions: Aquatic Xplosion and Mayan ATV & two cenotes are adults only, the ATV + Yalkú tour excludes ages 12 to 15, and Akumal horseback riding is for ages 8 to 64, up to 198 lb (90 kg).

Can non-swimmers go in the cenotes?

Yes. On tours such as the Tulum ATV, 5 ziplines & cave cenote tour, the Cobá ATV adventure and Chichén Itzá + Ik Kil, life vests are provided and you swim with your guide; expect stairs down into the cenote. For the calmest, shallowest water, Kaan Luum lagoon on the Aquatic Paradise tour suits beginner swimmers. Shower before you get in and skip sunscreen and chemical repellent; bring biodegradable repellent instead.

Is Sian Ka'an worth the long day, and will we see dolphins?

It's worth it if you want a full day on the water, but it is long and wildlife isn't guaranteed. Our Sian Ka'an tour runs about 7 hours from around 7:00 AM: a boat ride looking for dolphins and sea turtles, which are often seen, then reef snorkeling, natural pools and lunch. It runs Monday to Saturday with at least 6 travelers, or it is rescheduled, and taxes are paid separately. We don't sell the canal float from the Muyil ruins that some locals prefer.

When is bull shark season in Playa del Carmen, and do I need to be a certified diver?

Bull sharks are usually seen from about November to March, with December to February often cited as the peak (operator sources, July 2026); sightings are never guaranteed. A 2026 Playa del Carmen dive guide lists at least Open Water certification and about 25 logged dives as the usual minimum. Our private bull shark dive offers two options: a feeding dive, which requires Advanced certification and has professional divers feeding the sharks, or an observation dive followed by a reef dive. Expect a depth of about 24 m (80 ft).
