Adventure tours in Mexico City: the short version

Adrenaline offers guided tours in and around Mexico City: a sunrise balloon flight over Teotihuacán; One Epic Day with the Frida Kahlo Museum, Xochimilco and lucha libre; a quiet eco-kayak and seasonal night shows on the Xochimilco canals; a daytime Tepito walk; a historic-center photo tour; and outdoor day trips to La Marquesa, Ajusco and the Mineral del Chico via ferrata. Several include transport from central neighborhoods. You pay online, and most tours cancel free up to 72 hours ahead.

Questions travelers ask about Mexico City

Staying in Roma, Condesa, Polanco or Centro: which Mexico City tours pick you up?

Several do, and you don't need your hotel address to book. The La Llorona night show and Witches of Xochimilco include private round-trip transport from Roma, Condesa, Centro and Polanco. The Ajusco sunrise hike picks up at the address you give, and the Tepito tour collects you wherever a vehicle can reach. The Teotihuacán balloon tour leaves from the Angel of Independence, and La Marquesa has optional transport from Reforma, Polanco or Condesa. Payment is online when you book.

Should we visit Teotihuacán on our own or with a tour, and is it safe after the April 2026 shooting?

Going on your own is doable. Buses run from Mexico City's Autobuses del Norte terminal, and the site reopened two days after the April 20, 2026 shooting, in which a gunman killed one tourist. Since then, entrances have bag checks, metal-detector arches and more police (as of late April 2026), so allow extra time at the gate and check conditions on the day. We don't sell a ground-only pyramids tour. Our Teotihuacán balloon tour includes round-trip transport from Mexico City for the sunrise flight.

Can you still climb the pyramids at Teotihuacán in 2026?

Most likely not, so plan to see them from the ground or the air. The Pyramid of the Sun has been closed to climbing since 2020 and was still closed in 2026. The Pyramid of the Moon reopened up to its first level in May 2025, then closed after the April 2026 shooting. A July 2026 guide said neither pyramid could be climbed. Rules change, so check at the entrance on the day. On the Teotihuacán balloon tour you see both pyramids from above at sunrise, wind permitting.

Is a Teotihuacán balloon ride worth it, and what if it's windy?

It's worth it if you want sunrise views over the pyramids and don't mind a 4:00 am pickup. Skip it if early starts or climbing in and out of a basket are hard for you. Our Teotihuacán balloon tour includes a 50-minute flight, buffet breakfast, a bilingual guide and round-trip transport, back in the city around 11:00 am. Strong wind, more than rain, is what usually grounds flights, and the call is made that morning. You can cancel free up to 72 hours before. Bring warm layers.

Are Teotihuacán hot air balloons safe after the recent accidents?

Ballooning carries real risk, and Teotihuacán has had serious incidents: a fire that killed two people in April 2023, a crash in May 2025, and an accident in March 2026 and an emergency landing in April 2026, both investigated by Mexico's aviation authority, AFAC. AFAC requires inspected balloons, certified pilots, emergency protocols and suitable weather. Whoever you book with, including our Teotihuacán balloon tour, ask for the operator's AFAC permit and insurance, and be wary of listings far cheaper than the rest.

Frida Kahlo Museum tickets are sold out. Is there any way in?

Sometimes, through a tour that already holds timed entries. The Casa Azul (Blue House) sells tickets only online, for set time slots, and sales are final (museum terms as of October 2026). It's closed on Mondays, and holiday weeks sell out first. Our One Epic Day includes pre-booked entry to Casa Azul and the Anahuacalli Museum, followed by Xochimilco and lucha libre; check your date on the tour page. If you only want the museum, buy directly on the museum's official ticket site.

Can we do the Frida Kahlo Museum, Xochimilco and lucha libre all in one day?

Yes, if the day is built around the museum's time slot and you allow for traffic. Our One Epic Day does it in about 12 hours: meet at 11:00 am at Glorieta de la Cibeles, visit Casa Azul and Anahuacalli, ride a trajinera (a traditional flat-bottomed boat) at Xochimilco from about 3:30 to 6:00 pm, then see lucha libre in the evening. Transfers between stops are included. Hotel pickup and the ride home after the show are not. This tour is non-refundable once booked.

Can we visit Xochimilco without the party boats?

Yes: go early, on a weekday, or from a calmer dock. The party scene centers on the Nativitas dock, especially on Sundays, while Cuemanco is quieter. Our Xochimilco eco-kayak paddles the ecological reserve at sunrise (5:00 am) or sunset (4:00 pm) with a guide and a traditional breakfast on a chinampa, a floating garden. It's beginner-friendly for ages 10 and up. If you'd rather join the fun, the One Epic Day trajinera ride is the festive version, with snacks and drinks.

We're in Mexico City for Día de Muertos. Is there anything to do at Xochimilco at night?

Yes, two seasonal shows on the canals, both reached by trajinera. The La Llorona night show is a long-running show of music, dance and light about the legend of the Weeping Woman, Fridays to Sundays at 7:00 pm through November 16, 2026. Witches of Xochimilco is immersive horror theater on set dates from October 31 to November 8, 2026, and isn't recommended for young children. Both include private round-trip transport from Roma, Condesa, Centro and Polanco, which helps because rides home from Xochimilco can be hard to find late.

Is lucha libre worth it if we don't speak Spanish, and how do we get back at night?

Yes. You don't need Spanish to follow the masks, the acrobatics and the good guys versus bad guys (técnicos vs. rudos). Arena México's regular shows are on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday nights, with Friday the biggest; check the official CMLL schedule for your dates. Afterwards, book an Uber or Didi rather than hailing a street taxi, and set the pickup a block or two away. Our One Epic Day ends with lucha libre tickets, but it finishes near the arena and the ride home isn't included.

Is Mexico City safe for tourists, and should we avoid Tepito?

For most visitors, the realistic risks are phone snatching and pickpocketing, especially on the Metro, rather than violent crime, according to travelers and locals on travel forums. Locals advise not wandering Tepito, Iztapalapa or parts of Doctores without a reason, especially at night, and using Uber or Didi instead of street taxis. If Tepito interests you, go by day with local guides. Our Tepito tour is a 3-hour, adults-only walk with street food and the Santa Muerte altar, every day except Tuesday. Also check your government's travel advisory.

Visiting in rainy season: will rain or cold mornings ruin outdoor tours?

Usually not, if you plan around mornings. Rainy season runs roughly May to October and is wettest June to September, but rain tends to fall in the afternoon or evening. That makes sunrise activities such as the Teotihuacán balloon tour and the Xochimilco eco-kayak good picks. Early starts are cold, especially November to February and at altitude, so pack warm layers and a light rain jacket. The Ajusco sunrise hike runs only in the dry season, and La Marquesa may be cancelled in bad weather.

Not into museums: what outdoor day trips can we take from Mexico City besides Teotihuacán?

Forests and mountains one to two hours away. In La Marquesa, about an hour out, ride an ATV or a horse through the forest and finish on a 1 km zipline (La Marquesa ATV and zipline, Fridays to Sundays, ages 6+). The forest ATV and pulque tasting is a four-hour outing with round-trip transport. In Hidalgo state, about two hours away, Mineral del Chico has a via ferrata on the La Tanda cliffs. Traffic can stretch drive times. We don't run Tepoztlán or monarch butterfly trips.

How fit do we need to be for the Ajusco sunrise hike or the via ferrata, given the altitude?

Moderately fit for Ajusco. The via ferrata needs no climbing experience. Either way, expect to feel the altitude: Mexico City sits at 2,240 m (about 7,350 ft), and Ajusco's summits reach roughly 3,900 m (12,800 ft). The Ajusco sunrise hike opens with a steep 1.5-hour climb and is for ages 11 and up. The via ferrata in Mineral del Chico takes about three hours on a 200 m cliff, with certified guides, PETZL safety gear and accident insurance. Drink extra water and go easy on alcohol.
